2010 Summer Library Program

We're making waves!

This year 62 readers registered for the Summer Library Program and recorded 276 hours of reading in eight weeks. Through our "Read to Make a Difference" program, this reading time raised $207 for The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin, Friends of the Little Wolf Headwaters, and Wisconsin Trout Unlimited.

We'd like to thank everyone invoved in this year's summer program. Don't forget to keep reding!

Corny Games!

Black and white drawing of cornThe 42nd annual Scandinavia Corn Roast is coming soon, and the Scandinavia Public Library is celebrating with some ‘corny’ games for everyone! Kids and families can test their skill at a variety of games, including Bell the Cow, Cornfield Bowling, and Down the Mouse Hole. So come to the library for some ‘moovelous’ entertainment inspired by the Corn Roast!

Kids Crafts: Pirate's Plunder!

Librarian with paper pirate hat, patch, and parrotDrop by any time between 2 and 4 p.m. to enjoy some piratey fun! We'll make pirate hats, eye patches and a parrot pal, and maybe play a game or two! Pirate librarian Second Mate Brunhilda the Mad will be here to meet you!

Ages 5 and up.

 

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Baseball: Requests for Tickets Due

Timber Rattlers StadiumChildren age 17 & under can spend four prize tickets earned through the Summer Reading Program to receive one free pass to the Timber Rattlers baseball game on Sunday, August 29 at 1:05 p.m. at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI. You will also receive a voucher for a free hot dog and soda at the game. Limit one free pass per reader. Additional passes will be available for $6.50 each for family and friends to participate. Requests for passes, both free and purchased, are due to the librarian by July 30. Transportation to the game is not included.

Folk Singer David H.B. Drake

Drake as he presents "A Sailor's Songbag," a collection of “shanties” and “fo’castle” sailor songs, sing-alongs and stories about ships, the sea, the Great Lakes, and even the occasional pirate performed on guitar, banjo, concertina, dulcimer and Native American flute.

A native of Milwaukee WI, David has written more than 200 songs of the Midwest. They are frequently heard on Wisconsin Public Radio's "Simply Folk", "Higher Ground", and on public radio networks across the nation. David has served as the shantyman and educator for many tall ships including the HMS Bounty and the Clearwater. He currently serves as musical spokesman and music artist-in-residence / historian for the Wisconsin flagship "Denis Sullivan" and Pier Wisconsin Maritime Center.

Water Cycle Bracelets: Live the 'life' of a water drop! Travel through clouds, visit glaciers, make friends in a forest, romp in the ocean, and delve the underground as you play our fun water cycle game. Make a bracelet commemorating your journey while you play!

Adult Lecture Series: Rain Gardens

This summer, the Scandinavia Public Library will feature a lecture series for our adult patrons. These programs will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday mornings, immediately following Community Coffee.

"Rain Gardens" by Connie Abert, Waupaca County UW Extension Office. A rain garden is a simple method of capturing stormwater runoff, thus conserving and improving this important natural resource. Learn more about these beautiful landscape features and how to install them during this informative meeting!

Adult Lecture Series: Haiti Relief Experiences

"Haiti Relief Experiences" by Tammie Jo Berg. Founder of the global non-profit One Small Drop, Tammie Jo Berg recently returned from Haiti where she offered relief services two weeks after the earthquake devastated the Port Au Prince area.
