Sew a button-down pillow cover

Thursday, January 7, 2016 - 2:30pm - 5:30pm

Pillow cover made from button-down shirtLearn how to make a button-down pillow cover at the library with the help of our librarians. Don't worry if you've never sewn or crafted before; that is why we are here!

While all ages are welcome to sew independently or with a helper, you should have the patience and interest to spend as much time as needed to complete the project.

You will need a pillow form to cover. This could be a new one from a craft store or a pillow from home that you'd like to cover. Bring this along with you.

You will need an old button-down shirt to make the cover from. The shirt should be large enough to cover both the front and back of the pillow. The library will have some shirts on hand, but the supply and styles are limited.

The library will have sewing machines, thread, and other notions on hand.

Reservations for this event are appreciated, but not required. If you are interested in volunteering to help with this event please speak to a librarian or call the library at 715-467-4636.

You and your family can take a break during the winter holiday to enjoy some crafting and sewing fun! From 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2 - 4 p.m. come to the library to make a winter sock friend and/or sew an infinity scarf. Don't worry if you've never sewn or crafted before; librarians Meredith and Abby will be here to help you!

Winter Sock Friend

  • All ages
  • Bring your own crew sock, or use a sock provided by the library.
  • The library will supply the other materials needed.

Infinity Scarf

  • While all ages are welcome to work on a scarf independently or with a volunteer, you should have the patience and interest to spend as much time as needed to complete the project.
  • We'll be using this pattern from Craftsy.
  • The library will have some fabric on hand also, but the supply and styles are limited.
  • You can provide a piece of fabric approximately 24" wide x 60" long for your project. (3/4 yard of 60"-wide fabric will make one scarf, or 1-3/4 yards of 42"-wide fabric will make two scarves.)
  • The library will have sewing machines, thread, and other notions on hand.
  • Choose light to medium weight woven fabrics, such as chambray, cotton, flannel, lawn, gauze, linen, or terry, depending on how floaty or warm you want your scarf to be, or light or medium knits like jersey (T-shirt fabric), double knits, or ponte. (The sample that Meredith is wearing was made from a single-knit rayon.)

Reservations for this event are appreciated, but not required. If you are interested in volunteering to help with this event please speak to a librarian or call the library at 715-467-4636.
