Make a Difference!

This year the Scandinavia Public Library is suspending our end-of-program prize drawings. Instead, we are setting aside $250 to make donations to organizations doing valuable and necessary work protecting Wisconsin's natural water resources. For every hour that each summer program participant reads, the Scandinavia Public Library will donate 50-cents to:

When you turn in your reading log, you will get to choose which group will receive your donation. Additionally, the Premier Community Bank is matching our donations at 50%, so your reading log is actually worth 75-cents!  Ask your parents or other relatives if they're willing to make a matching donation too. We will have baskets available at the circulation desk for additional donations to these worthwhile causes.

Graphic Novels @ the Library!

Librarian Meredith attended Chicago Comics & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) recently and hand-picked some graphic novels (comics) for the library!

Cover of Mouse Guard: Fall 1152Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 is a "gorgeously illustrated, full-color graphic novel omnibus relates the epic tale of a band of heroic mice on a quest to save their kingdom. Though its beautiful artwork and engaging animal heroes recall the work of Beatrix Potter, its storytelling has the dark grandeur of The Lord of the Rings." The Mouse Guard tale is continued in Winter 1152.

Wolverine: Worst Day Ever is a diary followed by Wolverine comic. Think of it as Diary of a Wimpy Kid set in a mutant school with the X-men.

Gunnerkrigg Court: Orientation and Research features student Antimony Carver, "a precocious and preternaturally self-possessed young girl starting her first year of school at gloomy Gunnerkrigg Court, a very British boarding school that has robots running around along side body-snatching demons, forest gods, and the odd mythical creature. The opening volume in the series follows Antimony through her orientation year: the people she meets, the strange things that happen, and the things she causes to happen as she and her new friend, Kat, unravel the mysteries of the Court and deal with the everyday adventures of growing up."

Visit the library in person or through InfoSoup to explore other graphic novels.

What I'm Reading Now...

A friend  introduced me to "Mirror Mirror" by Marilyn Singer yesterday. This picture book features poetry with themes from fairy tales. Each poem includes a pair poem that is opposite order, line by line. With only a change in punctuation and capitalization, the meaning changes to an alternate or opposite of the first. My favorite may be "The Sleeping Beauty and the Wide-Awake Prince."Mirror Mirror Cover Art

"The Longest Night" by Marion Dane Bauer is a Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) 2009 choice book . The story is great...about gaining more hours of sunlight and moving from winter to spring, but the illustrations are what really grabbed me. Except for the final three illustrations, only the colors of ultramarine blue, Van Dyke brown, and the green shade of Windsor blue were used.

What I'm Reading Now...

Maple Syrup Season book coverI'm reading the picture book for kids, Maple Syrup Season, written by Ann Purmell and illustrated by Jill Weber. As a child, I participated as my family collected maple sap and boiled it down to produce maple syrup. This book follows another family through the same process from tapping the trees to eating "sugar on snow!" I consider making maple syrup from time to time, however the 40 gallons of sap it takes to produce one gallon of maple syrup discourages me. I am always ready to read about this spring celebration though! -- Sue
